2007-09-15: Lilburn Police Chase |
|
|
On 09/15/2007 at 0409 hrs, Officer Childers was on patrol on Arcado Road, near North River Drive, when he observed a maroon, 2005 Dodge Magnum, traveling southwest on Arcado Road. Officer Childers observed the vehicle weaving within its lane several times and also observed a large portion of the vehicle enter the northbound lane of travel and was likely to be hit by oncoming traffic. Officer Childers turned on his in car camera to record its actions.
Officer Childers turned on his blue lights and siren at Arcado Road and Killian Hill Road in order to initiate a traffic stop with the vehicle. At the red light at Arcado and Killian Hill, Officer Childers used his PA system to advise the driver to turn onto Arcado Road and where they would get off of the main road. The driver proceeded westbound on Arcado Road and then greatly accelerated his speed. Officer Childers then notified Lilburn Dispatch that he was in pursuit of a suspected drunk driver.
While they were proceeding down Arcado Road, the vehicle entered the oncoming lane of traffic and was exceeding the posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour by going approximately 75 miles per hour. Officer Childers continued to pursue the vehicle because its reckless driving and condition of the driver were an immediate danger to the public and himself. When they reached the intersection where Arcado Road turns into Lilburn Stone Mountain Road, the driver attempted to negotiate a curb on the road. He then proceeded off of the road and hit a ditch causing him to lose control of his vehicle and his vehicle to turn over.
The driver, Mr. Sanderson, was entrapped in his vehicle and he looked at Officer Childers and said: "I'm Ok". When Officer Childers commented on amount of alcohol Mr. Sanderson had consumed Mr. Sanderson stated: "You think." and he stated: "I know I did."
Gwinnett County Medic 3 arrived on scene and was able to extract Mr. Sanderson from the vehicle. Mr. Sanderson was charged with: 100031-Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, 10029-Failure to Maintain Lane, 100032-Reckless Driving, 100030-Speeding, 100033-D.U.I.
