2008-01-18: Suspect caught after stealing ATM |
|
|
(Friday, January 18, 2007 @ approximately 2:26 AM) Gwinnett County Police responded to an alarm activation at the Bank of America located at 1014 Old Peachtree Road in Lawrenceville, which is an area of Gwinnett County. When police arrived, the ATM was stolen from the drive-through area of the bank.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the Bank of America installed a tracking device on the ATM. Bank security notified officers of the pending location of the ATM. Police officers set up a perimeter and spotted the stolen ATM in the rear of a blue Chevrolet pick-up on Interstate 85 northbound.
Officers attempted to pull over the driver of the pick-up, but the suspect did not stop. Eventually, the driver exited the interstate and turned onto Buford Drive. The driver continued and turned onto Laurel Crossing Parkway, which is the Summer Park Apartments. As the driver attempted to turn right into the Summer Park Apartments, the ATM’s weight in the bed of the truck shifted and the vehicle flipped over. The driver was arrested without incident. The driver suffered minor injury and was treated on scene by medical personnel.
Crime Scene Investigators and a detective were called to the scene. A forklift was located in the parking lot of the bank. Although it has not been confirmed yet, it is probable that the forklift was used to remove the ATM and load it onto the pick-up truck. Police officers also learned at the scene of the accident that the pick-up truck driven by the suspect was stolen out of Norcross.
The suspect was transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center. The suspect had no identification on his person at the time of his arrest. Until his identity is confirmed, his name and photograph will not be released by this agency. The suspect is a black male, approximately 30-40 years old. Currently, he is facing felony charges of Theft by Taking, Theft by Receiving Motor Vehicle and Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree.
