CopCast PodcastThe California Kid is back in Virginia. That means that the 12 second video clips and the IACP conference are over. Mack did his "This Old House" imitation last week. Rich really did not accomplish much of anything but he had fun doing it.

We start off this week with the special delivery of a rape subject - to the police station. How about a 71 year-old cop that shows no sign of slowing down? A Florida deputy get into hot water as a result of his alarm clock idea. No more freedom of expression in the Seattle parks if it includes bare butts. I am going to run from you now. Could you hold my driver's license? A Wisconsin cop is pissed off. Will a mule deer Tase? A day in the life of a Flathead County, Montana deputy. No money available for your robbery? File a complaint.

Worker, 16, falls to his death at Gwinnett Place Mall

Gwinnett County Police Related NewsThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the deadly fall of a 16-year-old construction worker at Gwinnett Place Mall this week.

A Gwinnett police officer who arrived at the vacant Macy's building shortly after Luis Montoya fell to his death at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday noticed there was "no safety equipment in site" and none of the workers were wearing hard hats. Instead, the hard hats were piled together on the second floor, a police report said.

Montoya was tossing steps from a demolished escalator from the third floor to ground level when he lost his balance and fell over the ledge. He landed in a 5-foot-deep concrete pit at the bottom of the empty escalator well, said Ray Rawlins, an investigator with the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.

Investigators got a search warrant after receiving reliable information that Maddox had photographs of children engaged in sexual acts, said Cpl. Illana Spellman, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Gwinnett: Police sargeants' pay won't be adjusted

Gwinnett County Police Related NewsGwinnett County says it is not legally bound to correct pay inequities that have some police sergeants earning $5,000 a year less than their peers, according to the county's response to a local police union lawsuit.

Differences in pay existed before a new 12-step pay grade was implemented in January 2007, the county's answer to the lawsuit said. The differences carried over when the new system was put in place.

The newest filing says Gwinnett is not obligated to address the disparities because the pay system is a "discretionary guideline." The pay plan is subject to "interpretation, amendment and modification" without notice, the filing states.

CopCAST Episode 96 - The Rooster

CopCast PodcastThis week Morgan was able to stop packing for his trip to the IACP conference in San Diego long enough to do the show.  Mack did a good job pulling himself to the microphone, which is more than he can say for that charity tug of war he did this week.  Rich found out that there is a four o'clock in the morning too as he started his midnight rotation.  Fortunately, we were able to get together for another great show.

Apparently there were some unusual boulders in the streets of Boulder, Colorado but the cops "busted" them.  The Dark Knight made sure that a dark Halloween stayed safe for trick or treaters.  A Texas cop got credit for busting a car thief and got his truck back at the same time.  A Pennsylvania man is busted twice in six hours for DUI.  Talk about high tech!  How about a GPS chastity belt?  What would you do if someone made 7,000 emergency calls? We agree with you!  Breaking into a police station and stealing cop stuff is not a good idea despite what that alcohol is telling your brain.  This chicken rules the roost but not the cops.

Shooting leaves wife dead, husband injured

Norcross Police Related NewsA Norcross man is still recovering Wednesday from a domestic shooting that left him wounded and his wife dead.

David Wie Chin, 30, is in critical but stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. His deceased wife has been identified as 26-year-old Hoi Lie Chan, according to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.

It was still not clear which one of them pulled the trigger following a confrontation at the couple's townhouse in Norcross. Norcross Police Chief Dallas Stidd said no one has been charged and "we're really not ready to release what we've learned about the case."

Traffic accidents drop with presence of drug task force

Gwinnett County Police Related NewsGwinnett County police say there has been a marked decrease in traffic collisions since its Highway Interdiction Team — primarily focused on nabbing drug traffickers — began patrolling the interstates early this year.

There were 500 fewer accidents on I-85 and I-985 during the six-month period from March 1 to Oct. 1, compared to the same time frame last year, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli. The number of accidents dropped from 1,905 in 2007 to 1,434 in 2008. That is about two fewer accidents every day, Schiralli said.

"It appears that the high visibility of patrols is making an impact on the drivers along the interstate," Schiralli said. "The mere presence of an active law enforcement unit such as H.I.T. is influencing driver behavior without interfering with the criminal interdiction mission."
