Programming the Radio Shack Pro-94
Contributed by Casey Miller, Snellville, Georgia

The instructions that follow will walk you step-by-step through how to program a Radio Shack Pro-94 scanner to scan Gwinnett County's radio system.

Entering the Frequencies

The first thing we must do to setup the scanner to listen to Gwinnett County is to enter the radio frequencies used by Gwinnett's system. This will tell the scanner where to tune to hear radio traffic.
  1. Turn the scanner off and then back on.
  2. Across the top, line 1 of the LCD, you will see a title named “BANK A” or “BANK B” and numerals 1 -10. Beginning of the second line you should not see a title named “TRUNK”. If you do see the title “TRUNK” press the TRUNK button to turn it off then press SCAN. At this point you should see the number 1 (one) flashing on the top line. If you do not see this then press 1, on the keypad, to make the number blink. It will not matter if the scanner is set for “BANK A” or for “BANK B”, but if you like you can change this by pressing and holding the HOLD button for about 3-4 seconds. I will explain how to program Gwinnett County in the first bank, either A or B. Okay, we are ready to begin.
  3. Press PROG then press TRUNK. You should see numbers 1-10 blinking, at the same time. Press the number 1, then use the (up-arrow) or (down-arrow) to highlight “E2-800” then press E (lower right corner). It is very important to set this now or when its time to trunk and its not set right then trouble may arise and you will have to restart the whole process, from the beginning. You should now see the number 1 on the 4th line and see PGM on the bottom line. If you don’t see any of these then start over now. If you see these then proceed to step #4.
  4. Enter your first frequency, 854.7875, then press E then press PROG to go to the next channel.
  5. Repeat step #4 for the rest of the frequencies 854.8125, 854.8375, 855.3125, 855.4875, 855.7625, 855.7875, 855.8125, 856.8125, 856.8375, 856.9125, 857.8125, 857.8375, 857.9125, 858.7875, 858.8125, 866.1375, 866.2125, 866.3875, 867.3375, 867.3875, 867.9625, 868.1125, 868.1375, 868.4875.
  6. Let’s see if everything works. Press SCAN then TRUNK then SRC. It might take a couple of scans through the frequencies to lock into CONTROL CHANNEL, but you should start seeing Talkgroup ID’s in the LCD. If you are experiencing problems then you must start over. If you do see Talkgroup ID’s then you are on your way to the world of TRUNKING, pat yourself on the back.
  7. Now its time to start programming the Talkgroup ID’s into 5 sub-banks, or LIST.

Programming the Scan Lists

Now it's time to program the "scan lists" to tell the scanner what talkgroups (Fire Dispatch, Police Dispatch, etc).

For each trunk system, that is being scanned, the scanner gives you 5 "scan lists" that can each contain up to 10 Talkgroup ID’s, which means you can store up to 50 Talkgroup ID’s. These "scan lists" allow you to group talkgroups (like Fire Dispatch, Fire TAC 2, etc) into "scan lists" that will allow you to tell the scanner what you want to hear easily.

The instructions below will setup your scanner with the following scan lists:
Scan List 1Gwinnett Police
Scan List 2Gwinnett Fire Channels
Scan List 3Gwinnett City Police (4 of them)
Scan List 4Gwinnett PD (the rest) & City Police (2 of them)
Scan List 5Gwinnett EMS, Fire, and Sheriff

Programming Scan List 1: Gwinnett Police

To get started make sure that TRUNK is highlighted, in the 2nd line, and then press SRC, not SCAN, just to be sure, then press PROG. You will need to start at the first sub-bank and the first channel. The top line will have one number highlighted, which can be 1-5; in our case we need this to show a number 1. Also, we need the first number on the fourth line to show a number 1. To get both of these numbers to show a number 1, use the (up-arrow) or (down-arrow) to make this happen. Once both of these numbers show a 1 (one) then we are ready to program the Talkgroup ID’s.

Notes

OPEN/CLOSED MODE

OPEN MODE allows the scanner to stop on any ID code, even if the ID code wasn’t programmed (i.e. the Water Department or etc.).
CLOSED MODE, when set, only stops on programmed ID codes, which is usually desirable.

You can easily change this mode from OPEN to CLOSE or vice versa by pressing SRC to enter the OPEN MODE or by pressing SCAN to scan the CLOSED MODE.
