LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- More than 15 years after a Gwinnett County police officer was killed by a drunken driver, his fellow officers have not forgotten his sacrifice.
Gwinnett County police will recognize Officer Chris McGill with a special ceremony. The department will also place special decals on its police cars.
McGill was killed on May 23, 1993 when a drunken driver slammed into the back of his police cruiser.
McGill had just arrested another drunken driver, and was waiting for a tow truck to come take the car. _________________ " A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul " - George Bernard Shaw
Yes, indeed, also lots of us non-LEOs out here will never forget his service. Who knows how many lives he may have saved when he stopped that drunk driver?
I have no connection to Officer Chris McGill, but I think about him frequently, especially every time I'm NB on I-85 near JCB. That's where the collision happened, and today the bridge is named in memory of him.
May God rest his soul.

The first Officer on scene also worked for me part time. He was friends with Officer McGill. He had to be restrained from killing the guy. He thought a lot of him and said he was a great officer. I hate stories like this. Nothing good about them really. But when they said they were honoring him I thought I'd repost it in a few places in his memory. When I hear people complaining about "cops" i always think of these times. It brings perspective. He wasn't old ,weak, unloved, or boring. He died a hero. People should think of that when they talk smack about getting pulled over or whatever. They risk so we can play and live. Life's not fair. And it's a lot less fair to these guys. This can be "any day" for any of them. _________________ " A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul " - George Bernard Shaw

I think it's great that they are doing this, but I am curious as to why they waited nearly 17 years before honoring him like this? _________________ "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." - Thomas Jefferson

Alot of people have forgotten that Chris was also shot in the face, December 17,1986, while responding to a home invasion call off Oleander Drive.
That incident occurred when two burglars entered an home to steal Christmas presents. The parents were gone but they didn't realise that the children were in the home hiding upstairs and on the phone with 911.
When the scumbags realised the officers were on the scene, one tried to surrender and the other ambushed Chris from behind a door. He shot Chris at point blank range with a .25 auto in the cheek just below the eye. The bullet entered his sinuses and travelled down and into his mouth.
Both were captured later. They were career criminals.
Chris returned to work about five months later. Chris Magill is a true HERO of the first order. _________________ Barak Hussien Obama. The man who put the Rx in Marxism!

Thank you for that info on Chris. It's just more evidence my friend's opinion of him was correct. Even above and beyond pinning the badge on and hitting the streets. I did not know that. The streets have changed so much. When I was a kid back before electricity it was unimaginable that someone would shoot at an officer. It gets worse every year it seems. I hope they all stay safe out there. _________________ " A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul " - George Bernard Shaw

I am not sure why "we" waited so long to do the tribute, but being the officer who thought of it, designed the decal and got it running, I have only been with GCPD for just over 5 years and only been on the DUI task force for 8 months......and it took 5 months from thought to getting it approved to coordinating all the moving pieces to make it happen.

Officer Chris Magill was my brother's DARE officer in school. My brother thought very very highly of him. I think he is some of the reason why my brother joined the Marines. His death really affected my brother. I know I personally think of him every time I cross JCB's bridge over I- 85.
Thank you to all of you. LEO's EMT's and firefighters!

To the family of Officer Chris Magill: Please accept my condolences for your loss, and heartfelt apology that our community has taken this long to honor such a brave man.
To those who worked with & along side Officer Magill: Please know that many in our community respect and revere that most difficult of professions to which you all have chosen to dedicate your lives. __________________________
As a family member of an Officer killed in the line of duty, and an in-law of another, I can only imagine the pain you feel in losing him, but yet the pride you show in having had the blessing to have known him be your guiding force.
Although he was my 1st cousin, Detective Joseph Calice Thomas of the New Orleans Police Department, grew up as a surrogate "older brother" to me & my four sisters.
He ended his WATCH on Thursday, July 18, 1996 @ the age of 31. A 9-year veteran, survived by his expectant wife & 7 yr-old daughter. His wife, who has never remarried, was carrying a son he would never get the chance to know.
Initially, his younger brother John who had just joined NOPD after serving 8 years in the United States Air Force, turned in his resignation. He didn't want their Mother to lose her only living child.
But Joey's 7-year old daughter told him of how proud his big brother was that he chose to follow in his footsteps, and reminded him of how much Joey LOVED being a Police Officer, and so he remained on the force.
In the 12 years following his brother's death, John worked hard to return to college, attaining his A.A., B.A. & in 2008, his Juris Doctorate, while also rising through the ranks in NOPD. He was made Captain on June 2, 2008, and dedicated his acceptance speech to his true inspiration, his big brother Joey.
__________________________
The other Officer, married to another of my 1st cousins, Sergeant Morris Cavaliere, Jr., was killed just shy of the 2-year anniversary of Joey's death.
Although killed while in uniform, Mo, as he was known, was never honored as an Officer "killed in the line of duty" (with all that entails), because he was mowed down while performing a wedding ceremony procession detail.
Mo ended his WATCH on Sunday, April 26, 1998 @ the age of 29. An 8-year veteran, survived by his wife, herself an NOPD Officer, and 4 yr-old son. His wife has since left NOPD due to the disrespectful manner in which Mo's death was "officially" classified... she has never remarried and grieves his loss daily.
Officer Morris Cavaliere died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident... the car which struck him, was being driven by a more Senior, off-duty NOPD Officer... and so it goes
Please know that you all are NOT alone!
Our entire nation shoulders the grief and shame in having waited this long to honor Officer Chris Magill. May you find peace in knowing your loved one will be properly honored and forever memorialized. _________________ NinainNO, but been in GA for a decade!

Like other residents of Gwinnett - I do think of this officer’s sacrifice, his family’s loss and that of county in general as I drive 85… even before they renamed that overpass.
Thank you for helping others to know what happened. _________________ Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll - order and quantities subject to change without notice.
