The fire hydrant across the street from me is painted red on top, has been that way for while, can one of you firefighter types out there explain why? I'm pretty sure it wasn't vandalism, maybe I'm wrong. Also, what are the laws regarding parking in front of that hydrant? I know it is illegal to park right in front of it, are there also distance restrictions? The teenager across the street has frequent 'day parties', I have been asking them (nicely) not to park in front of the hydrant, they look at me like I'm from another planet.

Depending on the county you live in a different color on top of the hydrant can indicate a decreased flow rate or possibly one that does not work.

Trust me, if the hose-draggers need to use that hydrant, they will. And little Johnny will learn a valuable lesson on that day.

Gwinnett does not color code the hydrants to the NFPA flow system.

ALL fire hydrants are painted silver. A "black topped" hydrant means that it is out of service. Should not be painted red, unless they were out of black paint I guess.

I would call the water department tomorrow. You (the tax payers) pay for the hydrants to be maintained, ensure that they are aware and take care of whatever the problem is.

Let's see, approx 824,941 residents of Gwinnett based on the 2011 census.
1 can of Rustoleum paint about $6.00 at Home Depot.
I think we can handle it.
