His boss, Fire Chief Bill Myers says, "Captain Rutledge has been an integral part of the success of the Fire and Emergency Services Department. He has earned the respect of his fellow staff members and humbly serves the citizens of Gwinnett County." For the past six years, Rutledge has served as the department's Public Information Officer. | County picks new fire chief |
By Camie Young
Senior Writer
LAWRENCEVILLE - A veteran firefighter was tapped to take over as Gwinnett's Fire Chief on Tuesday.
Commissioners appointed Bill Myers, who joined the department at the age of 22 and rose to the rank of assistant chief of operations.
Myers, who will receive a salary of $135,000, replaces Steve Rolader, a 33-year veteran who will retire at the end of the week.
Rolader was one of 52 members of the department to take a retirement incentive offered by the county in an attempt to trim its staff and budget.
Earlier this year, budget issues caused the county to leave two recently completed fire stations vacant.
"There's a difficulty because of the budget, but I'm very encouraged with the strength of our organization," Myers said, pointing out that Rolader worked on succession planning for years.
"People are ready to step up. They are full of new ideas and full of energy," Myers said. "I can't wait to see what that might bring about."
Chairman Charles Bannister said he spoke to many people in the department, and Myers was given high praise.
"He was chosen, by and large, by the employees he's been working with over the years," Bannister said. "He has shown his ability to lead and get the job done in every area he's been assigned."
Myers served in the U.S. Navy before joining the Fire Department in 1983. He attended the first paramedic program offered in the department and graduated from the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. He also holds a bachelor's degree in safety engineering and master's degree in public administration.
New County Administrator Glenn Stephens said Myers was the "perfect choice" to lead the department of 600 employees.
"He has risen through the ranks of the department from firefighter to assistant chief and now chief, gaining the deep respect of employees along the way," Stephens said. "I am impressed with Bill's devotion to the organization as reflected in his prudent, achievement-oriented management style of open communication and shared leadership responsibilities. Bill will be a valuable addition to our team of department directors and his appointment brings to our senior management team yet another person of great character who is dedicated to public service."
Myers lives in Lilburn with his wife Jami. They have two daughters, Jessi and Kadi.

 | Another Gwinnett bus catches on fire |
A bus fire that tied up traffic on I-85 North near Indian Trail Thursday morning wasn't the first for Gwinnett County Transit.
Gwinnett County firefighters were dispatched at 7:51 a.m. Thursday to a bus pulled over in the emergency lane on I-85 at Indian Trail Road. Upon arrival reported finding heavy smoke coming from the engine compartment of the bus. A fire was located and quickly extinguished and damage was contained to the engine compartment, fire officials said. There were no passengers on the bus.
Another Gwinnett bus caught fire on March 27 on Nancy Hanks Drive near Best Friend Road in Norcross. That fire was blamed on a faulty turbo charger and resulted in a driver and one passenger abandoning the 42-seat bus.

 | School arson under investigation |
Gwinnett County fire investigators are trying to determine whether an arson fire Tuesday at a portable classroom trailer at Britt Elementary School in Snellville is related to other acts of vandalism involving classroom trailers.
Someone broke into several other portable classrooms at the same school this spring by shattering a window. However, there was no other major vandalism or loss of property associated with those burglaries, said Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for Gwinnett County Public Schools.
On Tuesday morning, someone forced entry to a trailer at Britt Elementary and intentionally started a fire. The trailer was not in use at the time, and no one was injured.

 | Snellville classroom trailer set on fire |
Firefighters responded to a fire in a portable classroom (trailer) Tuesday morning at an elementary school in Snellville.
Crews were dispatched to Britt Elementary School at 9:53 a.m. to find smoke and flames in the mobile classroom located away from the main building near the playground area. A passerby, who reported seeing smoke coming from the trailer, called 9-1-1.
The fire was quickly extinguished by first-due firefighters and was contained to the one-classroom. According to fire investigators, someone made an unlawful entry into the trailer and intentionally set the fire. The blaze caused moderate damage to the trailer, but did not involve the main-school building or the other nearby trailers.
